Pınar Selek, une sociologue et féministe d’origine turque réfugiée en France depuis 2011 et naturalisée depuis 2017, s’est engagée pour la paix et les droits des minorités et des populations précaires. Cela fait vingt-cinq ans qu’elle est victime d’un acharnement judiciaire orchestré par la Turquie, qui l’accuse d’avoir commis un attentat à Istanbul en 1998. Elle a ainsi été condamnée puis acquittée par la cour pénale d’Istanbul à quatre reprises entre 2006 et 2014.
En juin 2022, la cour suprême de Turquie a pris un nouvel arrêté annulant l’acquittement de 2014. Elle exige que Pınar Selek soit condamnée à la prison à perpétuité. En mars dernier, la cour d’assises d’Istanbul a confirmé le mandat d’arrêt international avec emprisonnement immédiat émis deux mois plus tôt à l’encontre de Mme Selek. Les débats sur la question ont été reportés au 29 septembre prochain.
Dans votre réponse à la question E-002557/2022 concernant Pınar Selek, vous vous engagiez à «surveiller les procès en cours, à venir en Turquie et à faire part sans équivoque des préoccupations de l’Union européenne à la partie turque à tous les niveaux». Dès lors, quelles démarches entendez-vous mettre en œuvre afin que la Turquie applique pleinement le droit à un procès équitable, cesse ses poursuites abusives et lève le mandat d’arrêt international qui entrave la liberté de mouvement et de recherche de Mme Selek ?

Pınar Selek, a Turkish sociologist and feminist who has been living in France as a refugee since 2011 and became a French citizen in 2017, is an activist for peace and the rights of minorities and vulnerable populations. For twenty-five years, she has been a victim of legal persecution by Türkiye, which accuses her of having carried out a terrorist attack in Istanbul in 1998. She was convicted and acquitted by the Istanbul Criminal Court on four occasions between 2006 and 2014.
In June 2022, the Turkish Supreme Court issued a new decree overturning the 2014 acquittal, sentencing Selek to life imprisonment. In March this year, the Istanbul Court of Assize maintained the international arrest warrant issued two months prior requesting her immediate imprisonment. Discussions on the matter have, however, been postponed until 29 September.
In your answer to written question E-002557/2022 on Pınar Selek, you said you would ‘monitor ongoing and upcoming trials and detentions in [Türkiye], and will remain unequivocal in raising its concerns with the Turkish side at all levels’. What steps do you therefore intend to take to ensure that Türkiye fully applies the right to a fair trial, puts an end to its abusive lawsuits and lifts the international arrest warrant that is inhibiting Ms Selek’s freedom of movement and research?
