Item 6  —  Universal Periodic Review

Mr. President,

During the debates last 6 May concerning the periodic review of Türkiye, several States called on the country under review to take measures to better respect the minorities’ rights, who are subject to discrimination and even persecution by the Turkish authorities.

Referring to our written statement A/HRC/60/NGO/78, we denounce the judicial harassment of Pinar Selek, a sociologist, feminist and human rights defender who is about to appear in court for the seventh time on trumped-up charges that have been contradicted by Turkish forensic police.

Referring to our written statement A/HRC/60/NGO/384, we recall that hundreds of activists, lawyers, human rights defenders, political leaders and elected representatives of the Kurdish minority are victims of arbitrary detention and we denounce the arbitrary arrests of Kurdish mayors who are replaced administratively by civil servants.

MRAP calls on the Turkish authorities to seize the opportunity offered by the leader of the Kurdistan Workers » Party (PKK), Abdullah Öcalan, to engage in a process of pacification and inclusion that will promote economic development and social peace in Türkiye.

I thank you for your attention.
